The Black Darcopsis is endemic to Goodenough Island, Papua New Guinea, and has a habitat range of only 100 km². Listed as Critically Endangered because the extent of occurrence is less than 100 km², and there is continuing decline due to hunting and habitat loss. The forest habitat of this species is being cleared by slash-and-burn agriculture and is rapidly being converted to grassland.
